My experience with track has been mixed. When I started in this hobby about eight years ago I laid groovy track. Steel prices were in the dumps and I was able to get ties pre-cut for free as they came in as packing material at the place I worked at. But I didn’t treat the ties, and laid the track right through my grass where the sprinklers kept things wet. Right now what’s left of my groovy is hanging on by a thread and a prayer, and it slated to be replaced with aluminum ‘west coast’ rail on EP ties. I’ll post on this endeavor when I get around to it. My father wanted to build a portable track and wanted a local fabricator that was struggling for work to do the job, so I drew up some plans. The price that was charged was not the thank-you one might expect when you throw a guy a bone, but the track is done and it does work. If you do use these drawings I recommend you get at least three quotes. The radius is around 17′, I chose this so three pieces of rail could be cut from a standard 20′ piece of tubing. This is light duty, and must be put down on a flat stable surface, such as a parking lot or tennis court.
